It’s a Hair Thing

Believe it or not, our hair ages as we age. Bizarre but true. It’s important to cut your hair every six weeks to keep in healthy. Pollution and sun take a toll as do blow-drying, coloring and daily shampooing. If you can go two to three days between washes the better. If your hair is damaged, you have the perfect excuse to cut it into a stylish bob (which is a hot trend this season). Short hair looks great on anyone with good bone structure and it softens facial features. Long hair is best if you have a long or round face.

Stay away from chunky highlights. Instead, stick to natural tones. Speaking of highlights, I just recently entrusted my hair to someone new. You know how difficult it is, ladies, to find that one person who will completely be in sync with you and your hair. After moving, I wasn’t sure how long it would take me to find that person. I just loved my Chris! Thank goodness I got a great recommendation and tried out “A.” She totally rocks! She can cut hair like nobodies business. Last week she did highlights for the first time. I am so particular about my hair, so I was surprised at how relaxed I was to let “A” highlight my hair. And while she did a really great job, it’s lighter than I wanted (I’m bummed about that). It’s important to be clear about what you want to ensure the end result you desire.

Shiny hair is a sign of health (layers of the cuticle lie flat and reflect light). Interestingly enough, whether your hair is straight or curly can affect how shiny it is. And how well you care for your hair plays a role in how healthy it looks. Hair needs to be treated gently, especially when wet. Your hair is more vulnerable to breakage or cuticle damage when it’s wet. It’s no wonder using a hot blow-dryer (or other heat styling products) on very wet hair can damage it.

Chose a mild shampoo if you wash your hair every day. Stay away from shampoos for oily hair if you have fine, fragile hair - as it can be too harsh. If your hair is dry, it’s a good idea to wash it less frequently. Select hair products wisely. It may mean experimenting, but the key is to find a shampoo that doesn’t strip your hair but leaves it clean. In addition, find a conditioner suitable to how you style your hair. For me, I need a smoothing or straightening conditioner in the summer because my hair puffs up in humidity. And I always look for anti-humectant (or humidity resistant) styling products. I am currently using PureOlogy products. I love their SuperStraight Conditioner and SuperStraight Relaxing Serum. I have gone back and forth between the Brilliant Brunette by John Frieda products and Kerastase products, but really happen to like PureOlogy at the moment. (Kerastase’s Masquintense is a fabulous conditioner!)

There are also hair refresheners. I have only tried one, and I am not a fan. My sister bought Clean Hair Fragrance. I sprayed it on one morning in lieu of washing my hair. I swear to goodness, I smelled like Carpet Fresh all day. Do you remember that rug powder, Carpet Fresh? If you do, you know the scent…very unforgettable! Oooff! On the other hand, I have a hair pomade that I love. It’s Zents Concreta in the scent Water. So clean smelling. It doubles as a cuticle cream - and I swear my nails have grown a ton because of it. Now that’s brilliant!

Healthy hair needs proper pampering. Invest in the right products (consult your hair stylist) and treat your hair with tender loving care. It’ll go a long way.
